PENCE |
Joseph Arden Pence Joseph Arden Pence, a dentist in Davis for 33 years and active community member, died Sept. 12, 2003 at Palm Gardens in Woodland. He was 90. He was born in Sterling, Kan., Sept. 25, 1912, to Joseph C. and Minnie Pence, a pioneering farm family. After graduating from high school, he attended Sterling College, then the University of Kansas City (Mo.) dental school. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a major in the dental corps. He was stationed both in the South Pacific and Europe during World War II. It was during this time he met, then married, his wife Hazel, an Army nurse. At the urging of her brother, Herbert Berg, a UC Davis employee, Pence set up his dental practice at 212 D St. in Davis in 1946. He maintained a thriving practice until retiring in 1979. He often arranged payment options for the less fortunate, his family said, and took calls at home from patients in need of emergency help at nights or on weekends. He opened his office a half day on Saturdays to serve those unable to come during the week. He also gave free dental help, once a week, through the county program in Woodland and traveled as far away as Nepal to give free care. It was during that trip to Nepal he saw a young boy hammer a nail into a tree, hoping that would rid him of his toothache, and was inspired to write a book, "Devin and the Toothache Tree." He had later hoped it would be published, his family said, saying it would make a "a crackerjack good children's book." A small, slight man, he could often be seen doing calisthenics and deep-breathing exercises, or his yard work, in front of the family home at 812 Oak Ave. -- or riding his bike to his dental office, in beret or khaki shorts, singing in his big baritone and greeting people with a smile and hearty "good morning." He sang to patients as well, his family said, and was quick with compliments for the ladies. An avid fisherman and gardener, he also enjoyed participating in community theater and church choir. After retiring, he moved to his farm in Sebastopol. He became a regular at the Sebastopol and Davis farmers' markets, where, sporting a red neckerchief, he sold apples and other fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and cider at an affordable price. He and his wife were early backers of the Davis Art Center, charter members of the Unitarian Church and founding members of the Davis Parent Nursery School. They also donated the property where he had his dental office to the city of Davis in the hopes the community would always have "a little bit of green." The city has complied with his wishes, leaving the grounds and building intact. The building has since housed the Pence Gallery, named in his honor. He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel B. Pence Aurdal, his parents, a brother, the honorable Martin C. Pence of Kailua, Hawaii, and sisters Thelma P. Tichenor of San Francisco and Georgia Pence of Sterling. He is survived by son Martin J. Pence and his fiancee Laurie Butler of Davis; son George Pence and wife Delores of Woodland; daughter Kirsten J. Pence and her companion Elliott Moorhead of Austin, Texas; sister-in-law Eleanor Pence of Kailua, Hawaii; daughter-in-law Katie Pence Hager of Davis; grandchildren Jennifer and Sterling Pence of Davis, George M. Pence and his wife Kim of Portland, Ore., and Christina Pence Flanagan and her husband Tim of Sacramento; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Nov. 2, 2003, at 4 p.m. in the Unitarian Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road., with a reception to follow. In accordance with the wishes of the deceased, he will be laid to rest beside his parents in Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Joseph A. and Hazel B. Pence to the Pence Gallery, the Unitarian Church of Davis, the Davis Art Center or a charity of the donor's choice. (Obituary from the "The Davis Enterprise," Friday, October 3, 2003.) |

PENGELLEY |
Eric 'Ted' Pengelley Eric "Ted" Pengelley, a Davis evolutionary biologist who was active in local arts and civics, died March 22, 2003, at Woodland Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was 83. He had lived in Davis since he retired from the faculty at UC Riverside in 1984, returning to the community he and his wife, Daphne, had loved since he began his academic career here 25 years earlier. He was born Eric Trevor Vernon Pengelley on July 18, 1919, in Toronto, Canada. He spent much of his childhood on a sugar plantation in Jamaica, where his father was the engineer, and at boarding schools in England. During World War II, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a radar technician and operator in Europe. Returning to Canada after the war, he enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he earned a diploma in institutional management, a bachelor's degree in biology and a doctorate in physiology. In 1959, he was hired as an assistant professor at UC Davis. He spent a year on the faculty here and a year each at UC Santa Barbara and William and Mary College before joining the UC Riverside biology department in 1962. "Ted was a remarkable man -- a highly principled and widely read scholar and humanist, and an unrelenting advocate of the power of evolutionary biology to liberate minds and spirits," Irwin Sherman, a zoology professor emeritus at UC Riverside wrote in a tribute to his colleague. "He was also one of the most unforgettable of characters." He studied hibernation in certain ground squirrels and showed that they have an internal biological clock that sends them into hibernation every year without cues from the environment. At UC Riverside, he taught the introductory biology course for nonscience majors. In 1970, he began teaching a course on human reproduction and sexual behavior, and taught the course until his retirement. UC Riverside was the second campus in the UC system to offer the course after UC Davis. The course led him to write a textbook, "Sex and Human Life," published in 1974 and 1978. After moving back to Davis, Pengelley became a "beloved campus figure," riding his bicycle across town to campus, delivering opinions to the Davis City Council "on a staggering array of topics" and giving lectures on the history of biological sciences until two years ago, said John Crowe, professor of molecular and cellular biology. He collected first-edition books by and about Charles Darwin. He and his wife, Daphne, an artist and art teacher, were active in the local arts and liked to travel to places where medical and biological history was made. Together they wrote, "A Traveler's Guide to the History of Biology and Medicine" (Trevor Hill Press, 1986). After his wife of 42 years died of cancer in 1990, he endowed a research fellowship in her memory for graduate students at the UC Davis Center for Population Biology. Memorial services are pending. He is survived by a daughter, Alison Hill Penfield of Ashland, Ore.; a son, David of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and a brother, Peter of Toronto. Memorial contributions are suggested to: The Daphne and Ted Pengelley Endowment for Research in Evolutionary Biology, checks payable to UC Davis Foundation and clearly marked Pengelley Endowment. Contributions should be sent to: Director, Center for Population Biology, Division of Biological Sciences, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616. PETERS |
Gerhart "Pete" Frederick William Carl Peters Gerhart "Pete" Frederick William Carl Peters died peacefully in his sleep in Santa Barbara on Aug. 30, 2004, just three weeks short of his 91st birthday. Born Sept. 21, 1913, in Roseville, Mich., he was one of five children raised on a farm in rural Michigan. He graduated in 1938 from Michigan State University at Ypsilanti, where he earned a bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate. Following graduation, he taught art in the public schools and married Viola Luella Rosevear in 1941. In 1943, "Pete" as he was known to friends, moved with Viola and his growing family to California. After World War II, he earned a master's degree in painting from UC Berkeley, where he continued as a lecturer in the art department. During this time he joined the Unitarian Church, which became a central part of the rest of his life. He moved his family to Solana Beach in 1955, where he worked at Convair Aircraft as a draftsman, contributing to the design of the interior of military aircraft. During this time, he and Viola became founding members of The Unitarian Fellowship of San Dieguito. In 1958, he returned to teaching art, this time at San Diego City College. In his final career move, he worked for the state Department of Education in Sacramento, moving his family to nearby Davis. There, he designed and built his dream home, where the family often hosted Democratic fund-raisers attended by presidential candidates, members of congress and state senators. He retired in 1981 and moved with Viola back to Southern California, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991 with a gala family reunion. After Viola suffered a stroke, they moved to Santa Barbara to be closer to their daughter, Eliesa. In later years, he lived at the Vista del Monte Retirement Community. At the time of his death, he was strong in mind and spirit, but weakened physically, spending his days in a wheelchair watching C-SPAN and other various news programs, paying keen attention to world affairs. His family described him as generous, creative and curious about the world. He never lost his moral compass and stayed true to the progressive and open-minded values of liberal politics. Those who were close to him will always cherish his wry sense of humor, artistic talent, devotion to family, deep wisdom, terrific memory for political and historical details, and his calm and stately presence. He was preceded in death by his wife Viola, who died in November 1993.
