GOJKOVICH

Gordon Gojkovich

By McNaughton Newspapers

Gordon Gojkovich, a former Solano County supervisor and World War II veteran who was also known in the 1980s as Mr. Democrat, died at home April 16, 2006. He was 81.

“He was a very dedicated American and a wonderful friend,” said Sam Caddle, who served on the Board of Supervisors with Gojkovich. “If he believed in it, he would fight for it. He was as straight and honest as you could find.”

While former Supervisor Richard Brann found himself on the other side of the political fence from Gojkovich, “he was certainly a friendly and outgoing person, a friend of everyone.”

“We had our political differences, but we had the same goal of making good government for the people of the county,” Brann said. “He was an outstanding gentleman.”

Honest, outspoken and outgoing, Gojkovich had a career that included being a rancher, publisher of the Dixon Tribune, Solano County tax assessor and Solano County supervisor.

Supervisor Duane Kromm, who succeeded Gojkovich on the board, described Gojkovich as “a legend” and “the guy you thought of when you thought of Solano County politics.”

“I don’t think I would be in this job if it wasn’t for Gordon,” Kromm said. “He was one of the granddaddies of Proposition A, the orderly growth initiative, and he had the world’s biggest heart when it came to taking care of people who were down on their luck.”

“He was the youngest oldster,” said Solano County Supervisor Barbara Kondylis, who called him “kind of my hero and my champion – mainly because his efforts with his home country and the homeless in Fairfield.”

A devout Serbian Orthodox Christian, Gojkovich’s family came from what was Serbia prior to World War II.

He was born in Bowie, Ariz., on Oct. 26, 1924, and served in the Army during World War II in a tank battalion that crossed Omaha Beach late on D-Day only to strike a land mine that wounded Gojkovich.

After the war, he and his family moved to Fairfield and he graduated from UC Davis.

Gojkovich worked as an inheritance tax appraiser just before he became the Solano County tax assessor in 1971 and stayed at the post for 15 years. He became a Solano County supervisor in 1995 and stayed on until 1999.

“Everyone would lovingly boo him,” said Kondylis of one of his public appearances as tax assessor, “and that would get a laugh out of him.”

The dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the fighting there distressed Gojkovich and he would take clothes and other supplies there to help the people.

“He was very supportive, but somebody did something wrong, you better watch out,” Kondylis said.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Savo and Nane; brother, Branko; and nephew, Stephen.

He is survived by his sister Danica; two nephews, Rob and his wife Zorka and Steward; and his nephews’ four children, Andjelka, Savo, Gojko and Jovan.

The Trisagion (viewing) will begin at 7 p.m. today at the Serbian Orthodox Church, 7777 Sunset Ave. in Fair Oaks. A funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the same church.

Gifts in Gojkovich’s memory may be sent to the Serbian Orthodox Church and will be dedicated to the church restoration project.

GOLD

Eli Gold, M.D.

Eli Gold, M.D., an expert in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and chicken pox-herpes zoster infections, and one of the first to isolate the virus from spinal fluid, died Sunday at his home on Mercer Island, Wash., of complications of a malignancy. He was 80.

He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Adeline, and two sons, Jeffrey and Steven.

Gold, a former Davis resident, was a researcher and educator whose contributions were made at institutions in New England, the Midwest, and the West. In the West, he was affiliated with UC Davis.

Born in New Haven, Conn., Gold graduated from Hamden High School, Hamden, Conn., and earned his bachelor of science degree in bacteriology from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, in 1942. He was working as a microbiologist in Connecticut's Department of Health when he was called to military service and was assigned to a program at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he participated in studies of acute respiratory disease.

After World War II, he enrolled at the School of Medicine at what is now Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, earning his medical degree in 1950. Following graduation from medical school, he went to Children's Medical Center, Boston.

In 1953, Gold was recruited back to Cleveland to be chief resident of pediatrics and contagious diseases at what is now MetroHealth Medical Center and a teaching fellow at the medical school.

Gold joined the Cleveland medical school's faculty as a senior instructor in 1955 and rose through the ranks, teaching pediatrics, preventive medicine and microbiology and ultimately becoming professor of pediatrics in 1969. Concurrently, he was a staff member and then associate director of the Department of Pediatrics at the hospital.

Gold was a postgraduate fellow at the Medical Research Council Institute of Virology, Glasgow, Scotland, from 1961 to 1962, and a visiting professor of microbiology at the University of the West Indies from 1973 to 1974.

He left Cleveland in 1974 to become professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics of the UC Davis. He stepped down as chairman in 1980 but remained on the faculty. He was named to the institution's emeriti faculty in 1986.

Over the course of his career, Gold authored several journal articles, chapters in textbooks and abstracts, and served on the editorial boards of Pediatrics and the Journal of Pediatrics.

He was a recognized authority in chicken pox-herpes zoster infections and was one of the first to isolate the virus from spinal fluid. His series of studies on the isolation of virus, propagation, and its serological characterization represent meticulous investigation.

In addition to these microbiological studies, Gold was active in studying Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, including possible viral and milk sensitivity etiologies.

Among the many awards he received over his lifetime were the Army Commendation Medal, 1946; the Crile Fellowship in Preventive Medicine, 1946; the Career Development Award, U.S. Public Health Service, 1964 to 1969; and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the CWRU School of Medicine's Medical Alumni Association, 1980.

GRAU

Charles Richard "Dick" Grau

Charles Richard "Dick" Grau, a longtime Davis resident, died Nov. 16, 2002, due to complications with pneumonia. He was 82.

Born on Nov. 5, 1920, in San Diego to Maude and Charles Grau, he lived with his parents, who ran a chicken hatchery in La Mesa, until he left to attend the university at UC Berkeley. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and received his Ph.D. in animal nutrition from UC Berkeley in 1946.

While attending college, he met Lois Sandner, a fellow student. They were married in 1941 and continued to live in Berkeley, where he was a professor of poultry husbandry, until 1954. The department, which later became the department of avian sciences and is now the department of animal sciences, then moved to the UC Davis campus.

Grau served as a professor of avian sciences at UCD until he retired in 1990 after 50 years of service with the UC system. His research interests included nutrition and physiology of poultry, seabirds and other wild birds. He was one of the world's experts on eggs. His background in studying the effects of oil and pesticides on shorebirds led him to become an active supporter of many environmental causes.

He was a dedicated researcher and teacher who was admired and loved by his students. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1960 to do research in England on embryonic nutrition and later did research on yolk formation in sea birds in New Zealand and Scotland.

He served as chair of the avian sciences department from 1969 to 1976. He was a fellow of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences and among other professional affiliations was a member of the Society for Developmental Biology. He was active with JASRAP, a summer internship program to encourage underprivileged middle school students to become scientists.

From his first days in Davis, he and his wife were active in numerous humanitarian and community service organizations, with a focus on world peace, social justice and environmental protection. The Graus were founding members of the Davis Unitarian Church where he chaired the building committee for the current church. They were also among the original organizers of the Davis group serving meals at Loaves & Fishes, a program serving the homeless and poor in Sacramento.

In 1965 the couple joined the Short Term Emergency Aid Committee, which serves immediate needs of individuals and families in Yolo County. His final volunteer activity was helping to mail the 2002 STEAC holiday fund drive letter. The Graus also worked together for Citizens Who Care, a volunteer organization serving the elderly and disabled in Yolo County.

In 1978, the Graus received the C.A. Covell Trophy as Citizens of the Year in recognition of their partnership in service to the Davis community.

He spent many peaceful weekends with his wife, family and friends at the Grau family's cottage at Dillon Beach, where he enjoyed fishing in the tidepools and collecting driftwood and shells from his long walks on the beach.

When in town, he frequented the Davis Farmers' Market where he will be missed by many who knew him by name. He and his wife also spent much of their time tending the large vegetable and flower garden along Eighth Street renowned for producing towering sunflowers, a wall of sweetpeas and some of the earliest tomatoes of the summer. When not in the garden, he could be found in his garage woodshop making furniture and puzzles for friends and family. He was a skilled carpenter who finished the interior of their Davis home.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois Sandner Grau; children, Susan Heiser and her husband Walter of San Diego, David Grau of Chico, Ellen Hedges of Livermore, and John Grau and wife Kim of Berkeley; and five grandchildren, Kelly Boyer and her husband Jeff, Lindsey Carruthers, Emily Grau, Kathleen Hedges and Elise Hedges.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Davis. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to STEAC, P.O. Box 1047, Davis, CA 95617; Loaves and Fishes, c/o The Unitarian Church, of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road, Davis, CA 95616; or the Unitarian Church.

Grantland William "Bill" Gray (1935-2003) (2nd obituary of 2)

Graveside services were held at the Winters Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 7, 2003 for Grantland William Gray. Known to everyone as "Bill," he was a prominent fixture in the Winters community for many years. Bill passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2003 at the age of 68.

Born in Woodland on May 29, 1935, Bill lived in several locations in Yolo County before his family settled in Winters in 1947. He attended Winters schools and went to U.C. Davis after graduating high school. In 1958, he married Mary Louise Kidder, his high school sweetheart. Bill worked at the Winters Post Office for 31 years, starting as a mail sorter and a window clerk in 1959 and retiring as Postmaster in 1990. In 1980, he began farming walnuts on his ranch just west of town, continuing to do so until his death.

Bill was always very civic minded and strove to make Winters a better place to live. He was a volunteer fireman for the Winters Volunteer Fire Department from 1963 to 1971. He was very active in the Fire Department, responding to fires, car accidents and medical emergencies. For many years, he also taught Red Cross First Aid classes to local residents. Also during his life, he was an adult leader for the Presbyterian Church Youth Group, a 4-H leader and assistant scoutmaster. He served on the Winters Little League Board of Directors and was president of the board for several years.

While working at the Post Office, he spoke about the Postal Service each year at the high school career day. Until recently, he gave presentations to local kindergarten classes on Native American artifacts and local history.

His sense of humor was widely known among Winters residents. He would see people coming in to the old Post Office to get their mail and he would rush over to their mailbox when they reached in, or hold their mail so it would not come out of the box.

He was also well known among Winters school children for his "alligator in the Post Office basement" stories.

An avid outdoorsman, Bill loved to hunt, fish and go camping with his family. He was always experimenting with powder and bullet combinations in search of the perfect load for hunting deer. He loved spending time with his grandsons whom he called his "best boys". They knew him as "Bill" and loved coming to the ranch for visits and riding on the tractor with him.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Louise; sons, John and his wife Linda Gray, of Rohnert Park and Joseph Gray, of Cotati; mother of Doris of Winters; sister, Carol Gray-Ricci of San Francisco; and his grandsons (Bill's best boys) Matthew and Michael of Rohnert Park.
