I am researching the COYLE / SIMMONS families of Tuolumne County, California.  Margaret LENNAN married Mathew COYLE in New York and they came to Tuolumne County (he overland and she "around the horn") in 1861-1862. Mathew died in 1867 and Margaret married Robert SIMMONS in 1869.  She had children by both husbands.  Mathew had at least 2 brothers, Hugh & Walter, who also lived in Tuolumne County.  I am interested in finding out more about the parentage of Margaret, Mathew & Robert and making contact with any descendants of Margaret, Hugh or Walter in particular.

I am searching for newspaper accounts of the murder of Anna May Smith that occurred in Tuolumne County on or about October 23, 1981.  At the time of her death she was 35 years old with a husband and two children and living in Woodland, CA.  I understand she was missing for several years before the body was found, so I am not sure if the above date was when she disappeared, or when her body was found.   Bellevue, WA

These Tuolumne Co. [probably Sonora] families may have clues to a George Francis McQUADE, born 1885.

1900 Census Ordunia, Casimera age 64 and wife Viviana, wife, age 69 live in 1st Township,Tuol. Co.
They have  8 family members with them, incl. daughter, Femia age 37 and daughter Nettie, age 34.
Also, a "nephew" Frank, age15, born Jan 1885 - this is same time George Francis' birth.

His mother was Euphemia ORDUNO/Ordunio/Orduna/Ordunia/ ADONIA  - variety of spellings.
Euphemia [aka Femia] may have married Charles TUBBS. He lives with wife "Lizzie" married 9 years and live in Fresno in 1900. George, age 16 lives with them. Last name written as Tubbs. This could possibly be. George Francis McQuade and it would be his stepson.

Nettie is Euphemia's sister. She married DUMAS. 1920 census shows Nettie as head of household and daughter, Madeline KEEFE, age 19 and son, John Keefe age 17. Cousin Madeline McBRIDE, was a nurse and her children are Frances and Johnny.
The McBrides or Keefe's owned a garage/gas station type of business,  maybe in the 1920's.  Thanks.     Sue Rydberg Canavan

I am researching an ancestor named Aquilla Willson.  His son named their first daughter, Sonora Willson.  Aquilla may have gone west to the mine
fields around Sonora about 1848-1849.  Aquilla's name is sometimes spelled Quillar/Quellar/Quilla and the last name is sometimes spelled Wilson.  It makes for great fun to look for him.  He was born in NC around 1800 and may have left here in Missouri around 1848 or 1849. Does anyone have any miner's lists that could be used? Any help would be appreciated.

In June, 1897 Sonora was the Convention of the Native Daughters of the Golden West.  The 11th Grand President, Mrs. Bella Conrad, of Sonora, was installed.  The Convention was attended by some 300 delegates.  Mrs. Bella Conrad was married to Frederick "Fred" Conrad who had been Sonora barber in 1880.  At the time of the Convention was Fred Conrad still alive (the census of 1900 shows he is dead) and what was his occupation at the time of his death?  I'm related to the 10th Grand President of NDGW, Mary Tillman, and I'm researching for a book I'm writing.  Micky Scholte

I'm seeking information on the family of Florence Myrti Scarbrough (b. 16 Jun 1908, Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas; d. 21 Jun 2000,  Sonora, Tuolumne County, California.  She married FNU Howell.  Florence is the daughter of Maner Stafford Scarbrough (b. 13 Jan 1877, Galveston, Galveston County, Texas; d. AFT 1934 near Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas) and Sarah Frances Cooper (b. ABT 1885, Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas; AFT 1930 Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas).  Maner aka Manor Scarbrough was my grandfather Albert Malone Scarbrough's younger brother.  There is little information on the former other than he was found frozen in a field in Oklahoma and rumored to have been murdered.

I have a large amount of fairly detailed information on Florence Scarbrough Howell's fraternal Scarbrough line back to the mid 1600s in Surry County, Virginia.  I would like to know more about her father Maner's death as well as her husband and children.

Phoebe Barnes of Groveland married Samuel S. Rudolph about 1870.  They had a son, John, born about 1871.  Then Phoebe and Samuel divorced and on the 1880 census she and John are listed with her parents, Rich and Isabella Barnes in Groveland.  On the 1880 census she and John are listed with her parents, Rich and Isabella Barnes in Groveland.  She is listed as Phoebe Rudolph, widow, age 24, on the 1880 census.  So Samuel S. Rudolph died prior to 5 June 1880 when the family was enumerated. She probably remarried, but I cannot find her son, John Rudolph, on the 1900 census.  He was 9 yo on the 1880 census.  And without a new married name, I cannot find her on the later census records either. What happened to this family?  John is my first cousin, three times removed, whatever that means. Is it possible to find marriage and divorce and death/burial records?  I can find nothing from Groveland.  Any help would be greatly appreciatedClaudia Kelley

I am looking for information on three related Harrimans who lived in the Jamestown/Sonora area. John Harriman, born Jan. 25, 1808, who with his wife Julia Ann Noyes, came to the Jamestown area between 1851 to 1856. He was a pastor. Their son, Frank G. Harriman, born Aug. 24, 1856, died Oct. 28, 1933 in Jamestown, but buried in the Modesto Masonic Cemetery. Frank's son, John Harriman, born May 3, 1883, died Nov. 1 1972, in Jamestown. There also was a Harriman Mining and Milling company in Sonora about the time frame of the first two Harrimans. My father, George Harriman (brother of John), and I, as a child, visited John Harriman in Jamestown a few times. He was a trainer of trick horses, which were used by famous cowboy actors in silent then sound cowboy films. He also owned a Well Fargo stage coast which he rode in local parades Ralph Harriman

I am looking to identify my great grandmothers birth parents. Her name was: Theodora Ricardo - Born in Columbia, CA on April 1, 1856 Apparently, her mother died in child birth. Her father then had her taken to a Convent in San Francisco to be raised. Also, her father was apparently tied to the Argonaut mine in Jackson. I have contacted the SF Dioceses but we fear that all other records were lost in the SF 1906 quake & fire. Mike Brophy

I am searching for the family of Paynter PRETTYMAN, b. 1799 in Delaware. He was married to Sarah HUDSON, in 1824 , Sussex County, Delaware. He is the son of Burton PRETTYMAN and Anne SHARP. I understand from the 1880 Census records that he and son John W. (age 42 b. 1838 Delaware) had no spouse listed for John W. and father and son settled in Sonora as gardners. Would like to know where both are buried and if John W. ever married? Also listed in the 1880 census in Browns Flat, was the married couple of William P. PRETTYMAN b. 1832 in Delaware and his wife Margrette b. 1852 Ireland. Am wondering if this also a son of Paynter? Missing would be a son of Paynter & Sarah's named Miles PRETTYMAN. Would love to know if he ever showed up in the area. I saw 3 land grant records for William P. in this county dated 7/15/1875, but am not sure what kind they were. I am assuming they were mining of sorts because his occupation listed on the 1880 census was Miner. Would love to know if there are anyother PRETTYMAN's listed in the general area that I might have missed. The family originated in Sussex County, Delaware. Sue Prettyman

Thomas Jefferson SHIRLEY, his wife, Mary SIMMONS SHIRLEY, and their family start appearing in Tuolumne Co. records in 1855. Mary's brother, Robert SIMMONS, was a rancher in the Big Oak Flat area for over 20 years. He first appears in county records in 1851. I am looking for any information on my family who came to Tuolumne County in 1851/1852. The first to arrive was Margaret PALMER , she was married to John Palmer. Her mother Mary DOUGLASS and brother Robert A. Douglass joined her in Columbia in 1852. Margaret divorced John Palmer about 1861 and married Joseph A. SMITH a lumber dealer in Columbia. Mary Douglass married a Thomas ROBERTS in Benecia on June 3, 1854 and I believe it would have been posted in the newspapers in the area of Columbia, Tuolumne County. Robert A. Douglass joined the Union Army in Columbia. I also believe Mary Douglass Roberts got a divorce in Tuolumne County sometime prior to Margaret's divorce from Palmer in 1861. Mary was a nurse midwife and serviced the area around Columbia and Sonora, and many of the little mining camps about the area. I have been unable to find Mary Douglass in the census but did find a Mary Roberts in the 1860 census in Twp. 5. Any information you might have on the above would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get anything, clues, etc. as to the whereabouts of Mary and her son Robert A. Douglass from about 1852/1853 until 1861. Mary was a witness in the divorce of Margaret and Palmer for her daughter and I believe that took place in Sonora. I do want to place their names in the California Pioneers, but need more information on them. Dona Windfeldt

I am trying to obtain information regarding Jonas and Mary HALCUMB who lived in the town of Tuolumne in the early 1900's. They first rented a place (20 acres) from an F. Black. My cousin has in his possession numerous tax receipts from the County of Tuolumne to Mrs. J. Halcumb. He also has receipts from West Side Lumber Company to Mrs. J. Halcumb. I haven't seen it but he has a Deed from Kinsman to Black for property in Tuolumne. Perhaps this is the property that Jonas and Mary eventually purchased. There is a story that Jonas couldn't read or write and that he had timber land in Tuolumne. One day, as the story goes, a ranger came to see Jonas and asked him for a right of way to make a fire trail through his property. Jonas, being a law abiding citizen signed what he thought was an easement through his land. According to the story what he had actually signed was a deed conveying his timber to a local company. I have no way of verifying that story because everyone is, of course, dead now. Jonas died May 28, 1920 in Tuolumne of cystitis. The undertaker, according to the death certificate was W.B. Burne of Sonora. Can you help me in my research? Thank you so much. Lynda Henderson

I am seeking information on my great great grandparents Thomas and Mary SMITH. Mary McMAHON was born in Ireland in 1838 and at the age of 13 she came by freighter around Cape Horn to San Francisco, where she lived for one year. She then traveled to Chinese Camp in Tuolumne County to wait tables, this would have been around 1852 or so. My great great grandfather, Thomas Smith born 1824 also found his way to Chinese Camp after traveling from Ireland to New York and across the continent. They met at Chinese Camp and married. I am not sure how long they stayed in Tuolumne County or what year they got married. They eventually ended up in settling in Eugene, Ca. where they had 10 children. I am looking for any information about them from 1852 to 1862. It is rumered that they were the Smith's that homesteaded "Smiths Flat" in Placerville but I have no proof to back that up. Thank you,

I need to find more information about my ancestor gr-gr-grandfather Wilhelm Strüver who came to Big Oak Flat in 1859 and stayed in that area until 1865 where he left to come back to Fort Wayne Indiana. He was born dec-23-1822 in Hanover Germany. He emigrated thru the port of Bremen and arrived at New York city May-17-1854. His religion is lutheran. He remained in the city of Ft Wayne for four years and in 1859 went to California. I have found him in the 1860 California Census for Tuolumne county. City is Big Oak Flatt and he is on page 144 of the Census. He is about 35 years of age and it states he is from Hanover. Wilhelm married in 1865 in Ft Wayne-Indiana. My dilema is that I do not know the exact birthplace of Wilhelm Strüver. . When I checked the 1860 census the miner below him was from Hanover as well. Do you know if the Germans in Big Oak Flatt came from a specific locale in Germany?

In 1947, a friend of ours visited the area and sent a post card from Twain Hart stating they had a nice visit with my father's parents. My grandfather died in 1937, so, Matilda may have remarried. Researching my great-grandmother who was born in Bear Valley, Mariposa County about 1869. The name on her burial permit is Luiza "Pereira" de SILVA (de Silva being her married name). She died (giving birth to her fourth child) at age 24 years (1893) in San Benito County. The first two children may have been born in French Camp 1887 and 1889. It is believed that Luiza was French (not Portuguese) -- my great-grandfather (Joseph Silva) was Portuguese -- so it is possible the name "PEREIRA" on the burial permit was written as he pronounced it. I have not been able to locate any records for her other than the burial permit. The death register lists her as Mrs. Joseph de Silva. "Louisa .

I am researching a possible branch of my family. The only information I have concerning my possible cousin (many times removed) is his name is Francis GIVENS, date of birth 10/13/23, social security number 553-26-2565 per death records as he died 5/83. His last known residence was Tuolumne, CA. He had two sons, Milton Eugene Givens born 1/28/55 and another, age unknown, who died by suicide in the late 1980s or early 1990s. There was at least one daughter also. There may still be some property in his name in Tuolumne. I believe he was divorced. I would be interested in any birth records, death records, military records, newspaper articles and obituaries on any member of his family. I am trying to trace Francis Givens history to see if it links with mine. It would provide a valuable piece to the puzzle if it did. I know that Milton Givens married a Tuolumne County resident, Tammi Marueen ?, date of birth 1/31/61. They have a son born in Tuolumne County named Lyle Brian Givens 5/28/83. They are since divorced. Any information or guidance will be appreciated. Thank you. Nancy Carr .

I'm researching the surname "Heer", it originates in Jo Daviess cty, IL. My ggg uncle John Christian Heer b. circa 1820s, served in the Civil War and all my family and I know is that he went to live in Big Oak Flat, CA. I found that it is located in this county, but has an obviously reduced population since the mining days. I just would like to know in what direction I should be looking since we have no idea what happened after he left Galena, IL. Thanks for any help you can give. Jennifer Heer .

I have been attempting to trace a relative. George and Amanda THOW I think lived in Sonora, California and had five children. The following is what I know: Jessie Rust Thow was born in California on October 21, 1905, and George
Holland Thow was also born in Sonora, California on July 31, 1907. There were three other children named Bess, Annie and Ruth which should be born around this same time period. Can you confirm that the children were born in Sonora, the birth dates of the other children and how I go about getting a copy of the birth certificates.

I have also been attempting to find out when George Thow died. According to his wifes obit he died before her and she died on 9/22/1945. I have reason to believe that he might be buried in the Tuolumne Cemetery. George came from Scotland and I believe was born on July 16, 1864. He might have had a brother named William with him.

Thanks for the help.
Phillip Thow .

I am trying to find out the location of the home of my great, great grandfather, Jonas Halcomb. He moved to Tuolumne around 1901 and died there about 1921. The family story is told that he owned a good deal of timberland there and one day a forest ranger came by his house and asked him if he would be willing to give the forestry service a right of way to build a fire trail through his land. Jonas could not read or write but he trusted the U.S. Governent. He made his X on the paper that was handed to him and found out later that he deeded his entire property to a local timber company. My grandfather, Chester Vaughn, lived with my great, great grandparents and when he was a boy he used to pick wildflowers and sell bouquets to the local Daughters of Joy who plied their trade on the streets of Tuolumne. He was there when the San Francisco earthquake hit and he said that he slept through the entire quake. He had so many wonderful stories about life in Northern California. I wish that he was still alive so that I could ask him more about Tuolumne. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me. Thank you. Lynda Henderson .

Seeking any sources of information on Joseph Michel
BELLOW, one of the earliest residents of Sonorian Camp. In 1849, he was operating an auction house from his canvas residence on what is now Washington Street. He also had a mining claim near Tuttletown. Mr. BELLOW is mentioned prominently in Maryat's "Mountains and Molehills" but much more is needed. According to Bancroft, he came from the US Navy in Mexico into California 1846-7 with the party of Martin Corcoran and William T. Wheeler. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find information on my Greatgrandparents I believe they lived in Tuolumne County around 1880-1900. I am looking for any info On James
COYNE who married Elizabeth MC LAUGHLIN . They had 8 children. the youngest was my Grandmother Ruth Coyne b.1900. Both James and Elizabeth died after 1903 leaving my Ruth and her siblings orphans. Besides Ruth there was Lillian, Lucy,Marge. I have no dates of birth, marriage, death, or resting place of Elizabeth or James. But I do know James bought land in Tuolumne Co. CA. I believe this was done in 1884 and some again in 1889.I also know together they had 8 children. The ones I know for sure are Lucille, Marge Lillian, William? , and Ruth. Ruth is my Grandmother and the youngest, born July 1900. Both James and Elizabeth died somewhere around 1904 leaving the children orphaned. Lillian and Ruth where shipped off the Portage WI to live with an Aunt and 2 uncles. I think they where from the Coyne side of the family. All I know of James is that he was a professional gambler and had spent time in Canada. Maybe he was from Canada and met Elizabeth there or just gambled there. Any help would be great.

Abraham died on 3 June 1876 in Columbia and is buried in "grave #284" He had a house on the east side of Washington St in Sonora, near a church. He had a dtr Mary Jane O'CONNELL (husband Patrick ) I have searched for MaryJane to little avail. Can find no death record for her. Am hoping to find records on William W. that would help as he seems to have taken care of her, selling her property for $1.00. On the 1880 census for Columbia, William is listed as"age 68 single and a fruit grower". William was one year older than Abraham and MaryJane's uncle. Would appreciate any help and glad to pay any expenses incurred.

Gordon died in 1957 and Lavina died in July, 1998 at the age of 90. She remarried in 1941 to Percy MIRIKITANI and had no children from either marrige. Gordon married for a second time on Decmember 2, 1940 to Harriet K.K. STEVENS, and had two children. Myself, R-M. Keahi Poire ALLEN, and Gordon Hunter K. Poire. If anyone can shed any information on his place of birth, I will be most grateful. He was born on June 11, 1908. Thank you,

My Aunt Margaret, born in 1882 in Pennsylvania, married Edward
BICKFORD late in life, and they spent their years of marriage in Sonora, or rather, in Shaw's Flats. Edward Bickford, who was born in 1880, grew up in the Columbia/Sonora area, and died at about the age of 88. He and Margaret were members of the church in Columbia, and have a memorial window in that church. They were buried in Sonora, although I'm not sure at which cemetery. I would like to know if there is anyone still living who remembers Edward and Margaret. Edward wrote many local color stories for me when I was a boy in Los Angeles, and when I visited my aunt and uncle in 1949, Edward took me on a tour of Columbia and Sonora. This was when the 1849 Centennial was just being celebrated. I have visited Sonora several times since then. I could not locate the cemetery when I was visiting. My aunt spent the very last years of her life at my home in Pasadena and died in Glendale, California. Edward died in Sonora. I visited the church in Columbia, where they were members, and the temporary minister had not heard of them, but I saw the memorial window with their names. Their good friends had been Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shaver, and the Rev. and Mrs. Hillhouse. I believe these people are now deceased. A Mrs. Sanguinetti took Margaret in as a boarder when she and Edward left their home in Shaw's Flats, and I think Edward was cared for somewhere else. If anyone in that area has any remembrances of Edward and Margaret Bickford, please contact me. Victor Murray
