RIO VISTA:

There is a cemetery district, but the location of the office nor the hours are known. None of the existing cemeteries have gates, and I (Peggy Perazzo) donít remember any signs giving opening hours of the cemeteries. There arenít even any signs indicating the cemetery names.

The original site of the town of Rio Vista was flooded in 1861/1862. (Source: Early Years to Golden Years in Rio Vista by Steven Martin Shinem, Published by Victoria Books, Vallejo, CA). When the town was rebuilt, four cemeteries in Rio Vista were created at various times. I was told by a volunteer at the Rio Vista Museum that almost all of the graves were moved from the old cemetery to the new - which one I donít know - maybe one of the Public Cemeteries:

1. Rio Vista Catholic Cemetery (sometimes referred to as St. Josephís Cemetery, consecrated in 1876).
2. Protestant Cemetery (created in 1862).
3. The Public Cemetery (created in 1862).
4. The Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery (previously called the Societies Cemetery, first burial in 1873).

(Source: Rio Vista 1877 - A report on the progress of the town of Rio Vista at the close of the year. From the Weekly Solano Republican, January 3, 1878, Copied and indexed by Ruth Setterquist, Solano County Genealogical Society.)

Today the Catholic Cemetery is situated at the convergence of Main Street and Highway 12. Down river of the Catholic Cemetery were the Protestant and Public Cemeteries. I believe this is the area that is covered by the park today in which some gravestones can still be seen surrounded in the grassy park. The Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery is on Highway 12 beyond the Catholic Cemetery on the right side of the road on a hill situated just before the Assembly of God Church heading out of Rio Vista.

The Chinese Cemetery
Apparently near or a part of the old cemetery near Andrews Park, the Chinese Cemetery flourished until sometime after the turn of the century. Then, by tradition as well as need to move the cemetery the remains were disinterred and removed to the Chinese Cemetery in San Mateo County.

The Two Rancho Los Putos Burial Grounds:

1. Located on Steinmetz Hill about 1 mile southwest of the Pena Adobe, there was a cemetery which was probably one of the oldest burial sites in Solano County. Estimates have placed this cemetery and the Tremont Pena-Vaca Cemetery to a time shortly after the arrival in what is now Solano County of Juan Felipe Pena and Manuel Vaca, grantees of the Rancho Los PutosÖthe Rancho extended from Lagoon Valley southwest of Vacaville to Putah Creek, north of Tremont Station. In 1963, during the preparatory work for the construction of the Pleasants Valley overpass in Lagoon Valley, along what is now Interstate Highway 80, 16 graves were removed to the Pioneer Cemetery at Pena Adobe. Later that year, 13 more graves were found and also removed to the Pioneer CemeteryÖ.

2. The Tremont Pena-Vaca Cemetery. The Tremont Pena-Vaca Cemetery founded at about the same time was located north of Dixon on land acquired by George W. Foster from the sons of Juan Felipe Pena, in the early 1800s near Tremont Station (at that time called Fosterís Station). The acreage included a one acre burial ground, about eight tenths of a mile north by northwest of Tremont Station. The cemetery was in an open field and cattle had knocked down many of the wooden markers. Mr. Foster enclosed the burial ground with a fence, but time and the elements destroyed the fence and by the 1920ís only a few scattered headboards remained to mark the existence of this cemetery. The names carved on the headboards were mainly Spanish in origin and included many Vacas and Penas. The realignment of Interstate Highway 80 to bypass the towns of Dixon and Davis pass near or over this burial site. Today, this cemetery is lost even to the memories of the old-timers of the area.
