There are a few simple rules which should be followed when posting any genealogical query. This applies whether you are doing it on line, or in a genealogical publication.

In effect you are writing a help wanted advertisement. You are looking for information to be provided by some helpful person. To be successful, you must first get the attention of that potentially helpful researcher. Put some thought into composing your advertisement. Be considerate of the reader.

  • Include only one surname in the subject line. Don't include other names in the text. Each surname should be the subject of a separate query. Every advertise-ment needs a grabber. Few people are going to read your message unless the subject line attracts their attention. Don't presume that everyone is as inter-ested in your ancestors as you are.

  • Don't expect someone to read between the lines. State exactly what you know and what you are seeking. Give complete names, locations and dates where available.

  • Keep it brief and to the point. Compose your query before you go on line. Try to keep the word count to 25 words or less. The wordier you are, the less likely you are to get a response.

For example; Subject: Hiram Jones -- Seeking date of death and burial of grandfather Hiram Jones b 1868 lived Podunk Co. IA 1910. Even to locate that information may require several hours of research. In some cases there may be fees for obtaining such things as birth and death records.

  • Don't expect a stranger to conduct in depth research of your family. Generous people will be happy to look up an item or two. Keep in mind that often there are professional researchers available who can help with more extensive searches--usually for a modest fee. Most dedicated genealogists don't have the time to research their families--and yours as well. There are of course some very generous souls out there, and you'll sometimes be pleasantly surprised with the scope of their efforts.

  • Don't post your query in just one place. Look for as much exposure as possible, but in locations where a link to your family is likely to be found.

Good luck with  your search.
