Hanford (Post office established Feb. 16, 1877.) Established in Tulare County prior to the formation of Kings County. The town of Hanford, Kings County, was named in 1877 by the Central Pacific (now the Southern Pacific) for its treasurer, James Hanford. While the railroad was under construction, material, supplies, and shelters for workmen were placed at various points along the right of way. Instead of being numbered, they were given the names of officials of the railroad. Some of these places became stations and towns, and others vanished when the construction was completed. |
