Information for County Coordinators

This page was set up to outline the most popular query systems currently being used by county coordinators in the USGenWeb Project. You do not have to choose one of the following systems if you have another one that works for you. Please send any comments about this page to Webmaster.

1. CAGenWeb Query Boards

This automated system, housed on the cagenweb server, is available for any county coordinator to use. Simply send me an e-mail message to Richard Wilson and I will set it up for you. You can also have Biography, Obituary, Surname, and any other sections you would like on the board.
The big advantage is that they are simple to set up and can be almost maintenace free if you are unable to service your page for an extended period of time.
You have full control over archiveing and backing up the query board. You can also delete any unappropriate queries very easily. You can also ban e-mail from a specific user or domain.

I do reccommend backing up the board every week or so, in case there is a system crash.

Logos are available to link to the new BB system, located at board logos

2. E-Mail

To accept queries by e-mail simply post your e-mail address and a brief description explaining the format that you wish to have them submitted.

An advantage to accepting queries by e-mail is that it is very simple to set up.
The disadvantage is that you must either cut and paste them into a page that you set up for posting. Also your mailbox can fill up quickly if you go on vacation or if you are ill for an extended period.

3. Guestbook

Guestbooks are designed to be used to allow visitors to leave a message after visiting a Web site. However, some people have chosen to use them for accepting and posting queries.

The advantage is that they are simple to set up and can be maintenace free if you are unable to service your page for an extended period of time.
Because guest book sites can have problems, your queries should be downloaded from time to time to a page on your computer (or Web site) for safe keeping.

Some Guestbook servers can be found at Guest Gear Guestbook & Dream Book Guestbook.

4. The County Coordinator Helper

CCHelper will help you organize your data in 3 basic entities. These are:

  1. Researchers: CCHelper will track Name, e-mail address, researcher's Web page address, and a note field.

  2. Surnames: The surnames referenced by the data in CCHelper. There is an option to indicate whether a surname is the primary or alternate spelling, but it is not required.

  3. Postings: Items posted for the county. The current version of CCHelper tracksqueries and surname registrations. Items tracked for a surname registration are the researcher who posted it, the date posted, and the county for which it was posted. Query items include all of those of a surname registration plus the query text.

CCHelper will generate Web pages for your data.

CCHelper comes with a set of sample pages predefined for you, but you have the option to change how those pages will look if you like.

See the CCHelper homepage for more information: CCHelper
