Monterey County: Biographies

A practical, effective institution of which the good housewives of Carmel are justly proud is the Carmel Bakery, on Ocean Avenue, under the able management of Bernard Wetzel, who was born in Germany, March 11, 1886, and while in his native country commenced to learn the baker's trade. In 1902, however, when a boy of sixteen, he came to the United States, and in Brooklyn, New York, continued his apprenticeship, remaining there for three years when he moved west to St. Louis, while at a later date he became a resident of Danville, Illinois.

In the latter part of April, 1906, Mr. Wetzel arrived in San Francisco, on one of the first trains to reach the city after the great earthquake and fire. For a time he worked at his trade where it certainly was most needed. Then he went to Roseburg, Oregon, and in Medford, that state, conducted a bakery of his own. Returning to California, he stopped for a while in San Francisco, and in 1921 came to Carmel, where he formed a partnership with Carl Husemann and organized the Carmel Bakery. Being widely known as one of the most expert pastry bakers in the country, it is not surprising that Mr. Wetzel's efforts have been an important factor in making the Carmel Bakery famous for the high quality, as well as the variety of its appetizing products.

It is only when one pauses to think of the various phases of daily life, and contemplates the part played by the baker, the butcher and the half dozen other manufacturers and merchants supplying with unfailing regularity what are absolutely essential to health and comfort, and, therefore, to human happiness, that one is able to measure such a service as that regularly rendered, and for a very modest profit, by Mr. Wetzel and his partner. They made a great variety of bakery goods, put up in attractive form and have enjoyed a constantly increasing business, not only as the result of the quality of their wares, but also owing to their enterprising methods and thorough reliability.
