Monterey County: Biographies

There are few men better known in the fishing industry hereabout than John L. Semenza, manager of the local establishment of the Standard Fisheries in Santa Cruz. Mr. Semenza literally "grew up" in the fish business and is thus thoroughly familiar with all details of that trade. Though of European birth, he has been a resident of this country and of California since the days of his childhood and thus long ago adapted himself to American ways.

John L. Semenza was born in the kingdom of Italy, on April 13, 1881. When he came to this country with his parents, the family settled in California, locating in San Francisco, where his parents spent their last days. He thus had his schooling in San Francisco and grew up there. He early took to the fishing boats and in this way became thoroughly acquainted with the basic department of the fisheries industry, as related to the local field of trade. As an employee of the Standard Fisheries he gradually advanced in that employment until in 1923 he was made manager of the Santa Cruz branch of that great concern's operations and has since been thus engaged, a resident of Santa Cruz, in charge of both the wholesale and the retail trade of this company with a well equipped place of business on the municipal wharf.

Since taking up his residence in Santa Cruz Mr. Semenza has taken a proper interest in local affairs and is doing his part as a good citizen to help develop the commercial interests of the city. He is a democrat and also takes a proper interest in local civic affairs.
