Monterey County: Biographies


Christiano Machado (commonly called Chris) was born in 1877, in Carmel-by-the-Sea, where his father, also named Christiano, was for many years a ranchman of prominence. He retired from active business cares in 1912 and died on June 26, 1924. Both parents were natives of the Azores Islands, who came to California in their early married life. They had nine children. In order of their birth these children are: Mary, Anton, Jessie, Katie, Lottie, Christiano, John, Mary Ann and Emily. The oldest, Mary, is now the wife of John Sucko; Jessie is the wife of Angel De Carli; Katie is Mrs. M. F. Martin; Lottie is Mrs. John Fratres; Mary Ann is Mrs. Charles Gould, and Emily is Mrs. Clarence Peterson.

Christiano Machado received a common school education and at the age of nineteen years began farming on his own account. Since that time he has been a tiller of the soil. In 1904 he was married to Miss Christina Olsen and soon afterward moved to the farm where he now lives, which is the property of his father-in-law. John Olsen, a prominent real estate operator of Salinas. This ranch consists of three hundred acres of good land. Mr. Machado carries on diversified farming, raising grain, sugar beets, beans and other vegetables. Mr. and Mrs. Machado have four children: Mildred, Alvin, Chrissy and Elmer.
