Lassen Advocate
Friday, Feb 2, 1940
John James McIlroy, native of Shasta County, but a resident of Lassen county for more than 75 years, passed away Thursday about 2 o'clock at the home of his cousin, Frank Dawson, aged 84 years. His passing was due to infirmities of age, but until quite recently he was now and then seen on the streets with a keen interest in the activities of his old friends.
He had been an "outdoor man" all of his life, generally following ranching and farming, one time for a period of years serving as county foreman. At one time he owned the Jensen ranch, now the property of County Agent T.S. Brown.
As long as Susanville had baseball, he was one of the ardent followers of that game, giving it as one of his reasons for living in town.
Mr. McIlroy never married. He is survived by a half brother, George R. Dobyns, of Susanville; a nephew, Charles Dobyns, and a niece, Mrs. Helen Brachere of Marysville, beside the family of his cousin whom he made his home during recent months.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Morrill & Hornbush Chapel, by E.L. Spaulding, Baptist minister. Interment will be made in the family plot in Susanville Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Harry Ryan, Lee Musgrove, William Spalding, Shirley Stampfli, Frank Abbott and George Lacey. |
