R. Kenneth Cook Taken by Death

Word was received here today of the death of R. Kenneth Cook, in San Francisco, long time resident of Susanville and son of the late Robt. M. Cook and Katherine Cook, publishers of a former local newspaper.

A thirteen-year-old son, Robert, his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Cook of San Francisco; an uncle J.J. O'Donnell of Susanville, and four aunts survive the deceased.

Kenneth Cook was a native of Washington D.C., 36 years of age, and for 18 years a Susanville resident. He was a graduate of Lassen Union High School and Villanova College, Penna.

His musical talent was one of his outstanding characteristics and made him friends in all walks of life. A requiem high mass followed by special services by Bishop Mouleen of San Francisco observed his death, Interment was in Holy Cross cemetery. Death was caused by tuberculosis.

This information with the finis mark familiar to the Cook "boys" in the newspaper work, came from the surviving brother. To his uncle Jim came these few verses, "To Kenneth" - a classic for beauty and frankness of expression and impressive for genuine and deep brotherly affection. With Uncle Jim's consent (and hope for the author brother's approval) here is-

To Kenneth

You walked through life as though it were a stage
Yourself the most important player on it,
Weaving your webs of fancy into plots,
Fantastic and absurd, and yet sublime.
That poor, weak body that now lies senseless clay
Failed to equal the rushing gallop of your mind.

You're gone now, Brother, you've made your final exit;
Alone, unheard, the last set curtain fell about you.
Poor Thespian! To have played so many parts
And have no audience for your greatest role of all.

So now farewell awhile.
I shall not grieve because the stage is bare;
This is but prelude to a greater role
That you shall play up there.

Don Cook
