SOTO
Andrew “Andy” Soto

November 10, 1926 – November 17, 2006

Andrew was born at the Rancho Buenavista near Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico, to Lorenzo and Victoria (Moreno) Soto. He is survived by his children Andres (Diana), Yvonne (John), Armando (Monica) and Yvette (Felipe) and their partners; his former wife Juanita Solinsky; his siblings Manuel (Henrietta), Mercedes Cardiel, Angelina Vela, Helen Morales and Vicente (Rebecca) and their families; and his grandchildren Ché and Alejandro (Danfeng), and Felipe and Micaela.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents Lorenzo and Victoria, his brother Jesse, sister Victoria, his beloved son Dana, his special friend Midge Mouritsen and brothers in law Fernando Vela, David Morales, and Tony Cardiel. Andy is also survived by his Tia Isabel and his Tio Herman Soto, and numerous cousins, nieces, including recently elected State Representative Mara Candelaria Reardon, and nephews, compadres and friends in Mexico, around the country and locally in northern California. Andy will be missed by all who knew him.

Andy was raised in the Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana. He survived the public school system that labeled him retarded because he spoke only Spanish to eventually retire as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. He began working at age 10 years old with his brothers Jesse and Pup, and took pride in being a hard worker until he retired at 65 years old. He enlisted in the Marines in 1945, which took him out of East Chicago to Camp Lejuene, NC, Officer’s Training School at Quantico, VA and ultimately Guantanamo, Cuba. He was honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1947 and granted U.S. citizenship.

Andy returned to East Chicago working in the steel mills, driving cabs and selling shoes at Kostel’s on Main Street and enjoying jazz until 1953 when he came to Berkeley, California, along with his brother Pup, sister Angie and brother in law Fernie to begin his education and family. He transferred his class units from Los Angeles City College to Contra Costa College and shortly thereafter began working as a draftsman for Safeway Stores.

Andy, through his dedication to education and on the job training, learned architecture and mechanical engineering. He worked for Cal Steel, Yuba Manufacturing, PACECO, Weigman and Rose, and Chevron from where he retired. His education at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he studied under famed Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, came in handy in 1972, when he was sent to Tamano, Japan, by PACECO to supervise the construction of container cranes. While there Andy developed a deep appreciation for Japanese people and culture.

Andy remarried to Joyce Stanfill and created a special relationship with Midge Mouritsen, with whom he spent the last fifteen years of her life.

Andy enjoyed traveling to Indiana to visit family and friends as well as Mexico, especially his condo in Puerto Vallarta and the Rancho Buenavista. He was an avid reader of diverse subjects and a fan of Jazz, Mariachi and Classical music. Andy enjoyed playing softball with co-workers and family and remained a loyal Chicago Bears fan even though he came to also be a 49ers fan.

Andy was involved civically in San Pablo in the 1950s and 1960s with the Leroy Heights Improvement Club and served as President of the San Pablo Salesians Boy’s Club. Andy took great pride in designing, and with the help of his colleagues, constructing houses with his friends Cecil Wilson, Steve Ghigliotto, Joe Silva and Kenny Snodgrass throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the 1990’s Andy served as a Boardmember of United Concilio West.

Family and Friends are invited to join in the celebration of Andy’s life on December 27, 2006 at Pepito’s Deli Restaurant at 1087 – 23rd St., Richmond, CA from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information and to RSVP, please call, Andres Soto at 510.237.6866 or e-mail at adcsoto@hotmail.com
