Death registrations were required within the State of California beginning in the year 1905. However, it took many years to implement fully the law within the County of Alpine. Unless a family lived in or near the county seat, death records often were never filed up until about the year 1920. Therefore, many deaths that occurred within Alpine County prior to the year 1920 were not recorded. Death records in Alpine County prior to 1905 are extremely sparse and none are included here.

There may be some ‘Unnamed’ infants within this index. Because of the high mortality rate for infants in the early years of Alpine County, many families did not give their children a Christian name until after the baby was at least several months old. Some of the unnamed infants also perished shortly after birth or were stillborn.

Names here are listed as they appear in the records of the Alpine County Clerk. To protect the privacy of living individuals, no information about mothers’ maiden names (or fathers’ surnames for deceased married women) are listed here. The Alpine County death records contain many errors, especially as far as the places of birth of decedents. Proper state postal codes were not used in some cases. For example, MI usually means Michigan, but also was used erroneously for Minnesota; AK usually means Alaska, but also was used erroneously for Arkansas; MS usually means Mississippi, but also was used erroneously for Missouri; etc. Only U.S. states, major U.S. territories, Canada, and Mexico have birthplace codes in the following index. The notation ‘EL’ means ‘elsewhere’, as in ‘elsewhere in the world (not U.S., a major U.S. territory, Canada, or Mexico)’. Verifying correct birthplace is up to the individual researcher.

REMEMBER: All information for this index was gathered via the County of Alpine death records and indexes. Information is recorded on death records via an informant. In some cases, the informant did not provide correct information about the decedent. It is up to the individual researcher to verify all information herein. Prior to 1940, no birth date or birth place is available. However, the approximate age at death is available. To obtain that information, contact the county coordinator (below).

Alpine County has never had a hospital. Many residents who were injured, ill, or aged were removed to other counties (or even to another state) in order to obtain medical services. Those residents on the west side of Alpine County generally went to Calaveras County or Tuolumne County in California. Those residents on the east side of Alpine County generally went to Douglas County, Nevada. If you are unable to locate a decedent here, you may wish to check for death records in one of those counties.

You may notice multiple people with the same surname who died on the same date. While this kind of occurrence may seem extraordinary in such a small county, that data is not in error. The deaths of those individuals most probably can be attributed to accidents of some kind, such as automobile accidents.
